We've seen the Japanese Domestic Market theme carried to all kinds of extremes over the last 12 years, and while sometimes things can go horribly awry, we're constantly impressed with how people keep at it and reinvent the look in inventive ways. Yeah, it's getting cool to hate on JDM lately (every trend always has a backlash), but the fact of the matter is that it takes real creativity and vision to stick with a concept but not directly follow in the footsteps of others.
Like all good art, it's about composition -- putting the pieces together in a way no one else has thought of before.
Rainier Deleon's 2000 Honda Civic hatchback is a project that's impressive both in parts and as the sum of those parts. You can see the attention to detail on first impression in all the telltale Japanese-market bits: the J's wing and tow hooks, Volk TE37 rims, native stickers (even a Type-One decal), right on down to the EK9 vehicle ID tag from Japan -- EK9 being chassis speak for the first generation of the venerated Civic Type R, a vehicle trim that to this day has never been offered in the U.S.
